Belief Is A Beautiful Armour, But Makes For The Heaviest Sword

Belief / John Mayer (Mayer)

Belief is easy. To believe in something, you don’t have to sign up. You don’t have to logon or subscribe. Or announce it, or prove it. Beliefs don’t have to be The Truth – you can choose to believe whatever you want to believe.

So it is beautiful armour. It’s a fantastic thing to hide behind and it keeps you safe. Wearing your armoured beliefs make it virtually impossible for others to hurt you with their stupid beliefs. You can repel all boarders, infidels and ne’er-do-wells.

But it makes for the heaviest sword.

Taking your beliefs and doing something with them is a different matter – here you need to state your beliefs out loud – you need to express what you stand for and influence other people, even to listen!

Persuasion is a weapon, whether you are selling, marketing, negotiating, applying for a job or asking for a date. Facts will get you so far – but a well-crafted argument based on your beliefs is a game changer. Uncovering the other person’s chainmail to help them eamine their beliefs is something else…

Self-belief is more complex. Self-belief is not merely having beliefs, it is not just about imposing your beliefs on others; it is about having awareness of a number of things about you. And this weapon is complex – like a Swiss Army Knife.

Self-Belief is a series of tools and blades such as Confidence, Resilience, Emotional Intelligence, Feedback (give and take), Humility, Self Awareness, Listening, Forgiveness and Love.

You don’t use the Swiss Army Knife to defend yourself, nor to attack anyone else – but you might want to carry it on your journey.
